Tigers are an important species to the ecosystem and culturally. These beautiful animals are threatened with their survival, yet there are things we can do now to ensure their survival.

About tiger

Less than 100 years ago, tigers could be found from eastern Turkey to the Russian Far East, extending northward to Siberia and southward into Bali. However today tigers are found in only 13 range states, less than 7% of their original range.

There are currently 6 tiger subspecies under threat. The South China tiger is now possibly functionally extinct and has not been seen for 25 years. Three other tiger subspecies have become extinct in the past 70 years, the Bali, Javan and Caspian tigers.

Some facts

Threatened with Extinction

Wild tiger numbers have dropped by 97% in the past 100 years. With three tiger subspecies (Bali, Javan and Caspian) already extinct, work needs to be done to stop the threats that are affecting Tiger numbers.

These threats are causing a decline in Tiger numbers:

Poaching of tigers for skins and body parts used in traditional Asian medicines.

Habitat loss due to agriculture, clearing of forests for the timber trade and rapid development, especially road networks. In Asia, only 7% of the tiger's original habitat remains.

Tigers are increasingly coming into conflict with humans as they stray into areas close to villages, because of habitat loss.

Saving the Tiger

Why save the Tiger?

By protecting tigers, an "umbrella species", we protect thousands of other species including humans.

When we stop the poaching of tigers we help strengthen local communities, improve law enforcement and save vulnerable species. One of the existing avenues is tourism.

Tigers have a vital role in keeping the natural balance of their environment. These areas hold some of the richest biodiversity and are critical in maintaining a rich ecosystem.

Wild tiger numbers are at their lowest level ever.

We must aim to more than double the wild tiger population by the next Year of the Tiger in 2022.

Let's protect this beautiful, awe inspiring creature.

corrida is awful. hunting for fun is awful, circus wih animals is afwul... I guess no matter what you think or people like you... you answered on your own question: it is in culture. centuries of cruel treatment with animals - it is in human nature, alas. corrida will be closed - but leather seats will stay with us. im totally agreed , but so...
