How do you see your future being impacted by energy availability
The impact/ effect of energy in our ecosystem affect virtually everything we do. Thus, energy availability would definitely affect everything we do. In my country Nigeria, The bulk of energy is being sourced from oil and the devastating effect on the environment i.e. oil spillage and gas flaring – cannot be over-emphasized. Consequent upon
this, the insurgence in the Niger-Delta region of the country has so far been escalated beyond measure.
The people in that community have taken their destinies in their hands by going violent after all avenue to amicably resolve the imbroglio failed. Multinationals like SHELL,CHERON et al have contaminated these peoples’ source of livelihood with oil spillage which makes it impossible for them to carry out their daily commercial activities of fishing and farming.
Without mincing words, energy availability should go hand in hand with green economy plans as proposed by United States President Barrack Obama.
What political and business leaders be doing
Political and businessleaders the world over should just take a cue from President Barrack Obama. Who has suggested that world leaders and business guru should invest money in energy options that would be beneficial to humankind. The political class can actually contribute by making necessary legislations – and also ensure enforcement of such. Also, there should be sincerity and honesty of purpose in executing all power projects. This becomes necessary, as the ripple effect of negligence on this fact is what results in communal violence and other health-related issues emanating from alteration of freshwater resources, degradation of environment which may lead to extinct of some species of animal and making our environment prone to some natural disaster.
Solutions for energy in my local environment
Nigeria as a country has spent hundreds of millions in US dollars in the past 10 years to generate and distribute energy in the country. Corruption has eaten deep into the fabric of all facets of government. As at today, $600 million has been granted to the Federal Government of Nigeria to generate energy by the World Bank.
Alternative sources of energy have their own impact as well. Nevertheless, out of so many options we have locally in the generation of energy is the solar or photovoltaic energy system. A typical example of this is the project carried out by Terrasolar (www.terrasolar.com ) – rural village water program that was completed for Nassarawa State Government of Nigeria.
Furthermore, it as a difficult and challenging task for the government of Nigeria to extend the traditional electrical grid using copper wire. This solar system has partially been adopted in some states i.e. Lagos state Government has actually powered major street lights with this form of energy and the government of Oyo State installed traffic lights at major city centers/roundabout with this form of energy.
In conclusion, if this kind of effort can be championed and sustained. Our power generation and distribution problem would be solved to a reasonable extent. Likewise, our people’s vulnerability to population displacement, lack of portable water and diseases related to the adverse effect of sources like hydroelectricity which is currently in use.

Sequel to this well established facts; that our ecosystem might not able to sustain future generation.Without mincing words, our daily activities on the environment is having a great negative effect on the ecosystem i.e. felling of trees, fishing, hunting etc.
By and large, it becomes pertinent that we raise awareness to the grass root level, especially our illiterate farmers and hunters alike to know the effect of all these human activities in our ecosystem and possibly stop such actions. And where possible, awareness has been raised as regards planting of trees in I replacement for the felled species.
Biodiversity affects everybody’s well being, for instance deforestation will go a long way in making our environments prone to natural disasters like flood, wind erosion and also reducing the abundance of oxygen in the atmosphere. More so, depletion or degradation of some plant species account for skyrocketed prices of some common food stuffs. This affects we in the developing countries more than our counterpart in the western world.
Local Government and political leaders should as a matter of fact pay a great deal of attention to extinction of species ; by creating – which has started in Nigeria a long while ago – animal parks which forbids any individual from hunting ceaselessly. Also, every local government should follow the foot step of the Lagos State (Nigeria) Governor –Mr. B. Fashola- who has already started ‘operation green Lagos’ By planting trees in virtually every available space in the state, even walk ways.
