Being a nag isn't always bad in Sustainable - A life's ethics

Posted on Feb 08 2010 at 06:24AM by pokeewokee

Individual change and empowerment are absolutely necessary in this fight against climate change. Anyone who says it's the governments' responsibility is simply copping out.
It's so easy to make small lifestyle changes that would make such a big difference. Yet we don't do it, why? Partly it is true ignorance. This is where anyone already leading an ethical lifestyle can help in education. Another reason is an unwillingness to change or a disconnect between a person's life and the abounding evidence of climate change. They simply do not see why they should do anything about it. Even those with children. Lastly, the worst reason of all, laziness.
I hate being nagged and being a nag myself but when it comes to the environment and animals, I don't care! I go after everyone in my social radius. I try and link the ethical change to a personal benefit to them. For example, not leaving electricals on stand-by but powering off saves money. Or walking more saves petrol and helps them lose weight. It's so much more than just making faces when they eat meat.
The important thing is not to lose patience and hope when you encounter resistance. Humans do not usually embrace change. If you approach them with love and understanding, the message will sink in, eventually. Just not too late, I hope!
