Liberia
University of Liberia-08
I have taken keen interest in Environmental sustainbility for over 4 years. my interest was predicated upon my completion of an Ecology course at the university and saw how dangerously the environment was being managed and which was endangering the future of the youth. since then i have been involved into youth and student initiatives to get young people involve in the protection of their environment.

Since the civil conflict, fossil fuel generated energy has been the nation only source of power but with the signing of contract agreement between the government and two major companies (Buchanan Renewable Energy and China Union) which will provide 40% of the nation's energy from rubber chips by 2010 and 60% of hydro power respectively, the change to renewable energy is eminent. The Government of Liberia has approved two housing development contracts for the construction of over 1,000 environmental friendly housing units outside the capital. Made from renewable local materials such as bamboo, clay-tiles, and sustainably harvested timber, Schieffelin EcoVillage will host 1,200 families. Considering the nation high dependence on fossil fuel generated energy, the ECOvillage will be illuminated with Solar energy which is a more cleaner and renewable. This will pave the road for use of better energy to safe guide the planet

While water is a major challenge for people in other parts of the world, many people who have access fail to protect it. If we don't protect the little we have now, the entire world will suffer from its scarcity and misuse.

I totally agree to Vivian point abut reverting to the Natural Energy Converting Model. When we destroy our forest through degradation and deforestation, there are two major implications:
First we reduce the amount of trees capable of capturing the huge stocks of carbon release in the atmosphere, while we also release more carbon into the atmosphere though forest degradation (local charcoal making).
Now the issues is how can we diminish what is protecting us while at the same time produce more harmful greenhouse gases?
Lets take action and safe the planet

If the definition of Suicidal is "taking one's own life" then the International Community, especially the developed world is suicidal. My point is in consideration of the fact that we all understand and recognize the drastic encroachment Climate Change is creating on our future but yet fail to live an environmental friendly life, especially with regards to adapting clean energy (Renewable Energy)policy. If we refuse to adhere we may not be where we aspire to be in the next 50 years.

In developing countries like Liberia, most of the energy used for other
purposes like cooking, heater, ironing, etc. comes from charcoal . The process used to prepare this charcoal emits significant portion of carbon into the atmosphere which is one of the contributing factors for our planet demise. The World Bank Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) has encouraged all countries to developed their Reduction of Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) Readiness Plan
(R-plan). The REDD R-Plan is an initiative that involves government, civil society organizations, Private sectors and the local communities to develop mechanism of reducing carbon emission from charcoal making, upland farming, community encroachment on forest, etc.
The REDD-R-Plan is an appropriate supports adaptation to renewable energy and control the amount of danger coming from the making of cahrcoal....

But we must always form synergy
Because what the world needs can cause its demise
Therefore we have organized to give pieces of advice
However some great powers have refuse suggestion to compromise
If we don’t protect our earth it is obvious that we will all die
Yet many fail to take heed which makes us commit suicide
When nature has given us what can be renewed
We have decided to prioritize the one that changes our mood
Even though the renewed is affordable
But we’ve taken the one that is extremely degrade –able
Please act to safe our future
So that we cannot experience pre-departure

The British government has given the go ahead to develop new coal-fired power plants that that will produce over 20% of power station out puts and cut down carbon emissions significantly. This new technology is welcome by many trade unionists claiming that it will provide jobs, produce stable energy and cut down emissions. But Some environmentalist argue that this "Clean Technology" emits 3 tons of carbon in the atmosphere for every one ton it stores. UK has been striving to reduce its emissions level but many environmentalists have informed of the danger the new coal-fired power plants post to the environment.

I agree with Monaem on promoting new and fresh concepts for
sustainability but the point is whether it originates from
corporate executives or youth, we should ensure the successful
implementation of that idea. For too long have many ideas been
transformed into policy and piled up on shelves in offices but the
actual realization of these concepts is the problem. Remember "a good
idea is like a crying child in the church.. it must be carried out
immediately."

Sometimes i wonder on the level of reduction in carbon emission when a 1,000 persons decide to take a bicycle to work instead of driving their car. I learned last week that the number of bicycles in the Netherlands are more than the number of cars. which suggests that more people use bicycle to than cars. If we can chose to use our bicycles, the level of emissions will be reduced, we will be healthier, the environment will be protected and our future will be secured.

Gender consideration into the production of solar household panel is very critical. In the global South, women are tracked as caretakers and most often care-givers for most families. They fetch water, cook, engage in agricultural activities for food production, and take are of the children while the Men on the other hand move in the village with his colleagues, play check-up (a game) and rink wine under the tree.
Once these women are trained on how to use the solar panel for household energy, she can even sell some of the energy to her neighbor and use the money for maintaining the children and family as a well.
The technology use in these solar panels should consider the roles and responsibilities of different sexes (men and Women)
Including a gender perspective into the production of these solar panels fro household energy consumption will be more sustainable and successful.

I agree with jennyjst for the inclusion of indigenous people into
mitigation and adaptation initiatives. The Clean Development Mechanism
(CDM) has awarded over 30 projects but with non involving indigenous
people. These are the custodians of ancient forest and to clear these
forests also is a medium of increasing emissions through deforestation.
Policy makers must see these indigenous people as stakeholders in the
mitigation efforts. As long they are excluded from the planning and
implementation of mitigation initiatives dealing with ancient forests,
failure is ascertain. Even the REDD process at this level should
include the indigenous people. For too long have these people taken
ownership of the forest and they need to be inclusive to ensure success
of this aspect of mitigation.

Many view sustainability and its related concept as an issue that must be discussed with decent grammar and rhetorical statements. However, My view about sustainability (especially economic and environmental sustainability) is not a matter of one single global TOPIC that should be propounded upon with sweet words and decent vocabulary. I think sustainability is a problem that must be handled as soon as possible or else we might deprive ourselves of constant consumptions/utility and gamble the lives of future generation. I defined issue as an "important topic, situation and circumstance for discussion and debate." Problem on the other hand is being considered here as "a matter or situation regarded as unwelcome and need urgent as well as significant response." With these two definitions, the world has decided to address sustainability as an issue that need more debate and not as a problem that need urgent solution. Until we can rearrange out thoughts and concept of sustainability, the planet will be a mess to live in.
