Environment Tax in Sustainable - A life's ethics

Posted on Jan 18 2010 at 03:26PM by A1ex1987

I think the government should consider creating a subsection of normal tax paid that is dedicated to helping national and international conervation efforts, the same way that normal tax is channelled to areas that need it, for example construction and roadworks. It should work in the same way as usual tax, so the higher income pays a higher environmental tax because they are more likely to have vehicles and a lifestyle that is more threatening to the natural environment. Perhaps this tax could be reduced if people buy fuel-efficient/greener/electric cars and even more if people decide to use a bicycle. This environmental tax could be used to build new cycle lanes across London, for example. Not sure if anyone has mentioned this before?

Well yes that's the problem Each ... in Sustainable - A life's ethics

Well yes, that's the problem. Each person thinks that they alone can't really make a difference, but they don't realise that everyone has to act individually and as a whole to change policy and the general materialist way of life.

Spreading awareness through places like the internet and popular tv channels is probably the quickest and greenest way to do it, especially if companies like Sky and huge advertising companies sponsor the WWF and other organisations. Things are getting much worse as climate change becomes more evident, we've had more natural disasters in the last century than any other century before. I don't think people really realise what needs to be done before there is palpable danger to their livelihoods. For example, not many people really understand the illegal logging industry because it is irrelevant to their lifestyle and is so far away, so they think it's not really an issue, which is sad.

It's our job to help people see that no matter how far away or 'irrelevent' something is, if it's harming our world we should take action against it. To get back to government policy, the biggest problem is dealing with the black market and corruption at the highest levels.
